Day 10: #10albumsin10days Shack - ...here’s Tom Day 10: #10albumsin10days
Shack - ...here’s Tom with the weather
It had to be Shack. Probably another overlooked album. But it’s the album that introduced them to me. Not sure how I missed HMS Fable. But I did. Looking back there was a lot going on in 98/99 so it slipped through the net.
An album that introduced me to Shack. Mick and John. Waterpistol, The Strands, The Pale Fountains. Imagine that? Some of the best gigs I’ve ever been too. Wonderful trips to Liverpool and beyond Some incredible friends both virtual (hello Shacknet!) and all around the real world who I still see and speak to to this day. Many of you may be reading this now. So hello!
This really was a portal to a new world. The power of music eh? And a CD that accompanied me through a lot of big changes when it came out. There’s so much attached to this.
And of course the songs. Meant to Be, Soldier Man, Byrds Turn to Stone, Miles Apart, Girl With The Long Brown Hair, Carousel... up there with their best songs.
Anyway. There you go. 10 albums in 10 days. Hope you’ve enjoyed. Was a lovely journey to go on righty now. So many happy memories.

Day 9: #10albumsin10days New Order - Get Ready No Day 9: #10albumsin10days
New Order - Get Ready
Not regarded as one of the band’s best albums. But it brought them back from the dead and had a place in my car CD changer longer than most albums I can think of.
It kicked off an obsession for a band who seemed to have gone their separate ways. So when Crystal came out - one of their finest songs in my opinion - it felt like a second chance to get involved. Turn My Way, Run Wild are great songs, and the always overlooks Vicious Streak. Why has this song been forgotten? It’s ace.
The Move Festival gig later that year, and a generally exciting time driving about with this as a soundtrack for me is why it makes this list. There were a lot of contenders that missed out.

Day 8: #10albumsin10days The War On Drugs - Lost Day 8: #10albumsin10days
The War On Drugs - Lost in the Dream
An album that came out not long before we opened in 2014. So a lot of memories of this being on heavy rotation in the early days. Did a lot of mopping and cleaning toilets to this album. Brilliant days.
This was also the album that introduced me to the band, and subsequently to @kurtvile who various people had been banging on about for ages, but never got round to giving him a listen.
Both are now among my favourite artists. And this ranks alongside my favourite ever albums.
Springsteen meets shoegaze with a bit of psychedelia.
I can’t remember what put me on to them, it’s worth checking out the video of them playing Red Eyes on Letterman. So it was either that or Under Pressure. Just hearing those songs brings back ace memories.
They pull it off live too. Been fortunate to see both them and Kurt Vile, and they’re everything you’d want them to be.

Day 7: #10albumsin10days
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - B.R.M.C.
I remember hearing, or possibly seeing the Love Burns single on MTV - back when it had music videos on. Immediately went out and bought the album. And again. Another obsession was born.
Another band I’ve seen countless times live. Including the gig in Leeds that got halted half way through as the floor was going to give in. The support that night was @thebrianjonestown and we ended up taking Aton round the pubs of Leeds after bumping into him outside in the post abandonment confusion.
An album of stripped back. Black leather. Rock and roll. No fuss. Just blasting riffs.

Day 6: #10albumsin10days Doves - The Last Broadca Day 6: #10albumsin10days
Doves - The Last Broadcast
The album that got me into them and one of the bands I’ve seen the most live. Move Festival at Old Trafford in 2002 and Parr Hall, Warrington last year the two stand outs.
Another album where each song is as good as the one before and the one after.
In fact, I don’t think there’s a song worth skipping on any of their albums.
Another band that became on obsession.

Day 5: #10albumsin10days
Beck - Odelay
Next on the obsession list.
I remember loser coming out. Possibly heard for the first time on the top deck of the bus on the way home from school. Another song that sounded like nothing I’d heard. Next it was a regular on the playlist at Tumblers. One to shuffle to on the dance floor.
But it wasn’t until Odelay that I bought anything by Beck. And it went on to launch another obsession for the rest of the decade. This CD didn’t leave the changer in the car for years. And accompanied me up and down the a1 to university in Newcastle and then to work a few years later. A bridge from hip hop back to guitar music and sampling, that would end up going through artists as varied as David Holmes, Jedi Knights...
Above all a cool album. Everything about it. The videos. The look. The songs. The cover. If you didn’t want to be Beck after this then you can’t have been paying attention.

Day 4: #10albumsin10days Ice Cube - Death Certifi Day 4: #10albumsin10days
Ice Cube - Death Certificate
The theme seems to be obsessions here. Ice Cubes second album. And I’m blown away. Never heard anything like it. It leads on a journey through NWA, Da Lench Mob - Guerillas in tha Mist, the whole west coast p funk from Rappin’ 4-Tay to Coolio, WC and the Maad Circle, Funkdoobiest, Cypress Hill and countless more. This in turn leads to the 70s and Parliament, Funkadelic, Bootsy Collins etc which I’d earlier brushed with through an obsession with Red Hot Chilli Peppers... Or maybe it was the other way round. That seems more likely. It was a long time ago.
Anyway, possibly not his best album. But it’s the one that opened the door for me.

Day 3 #10albumsin10days
Sugar - Copper Blue
Another album that got me obsessed when it came out. This and the follow up EP Beaster.
Another journey starting in the early 90s discovering the back catalogue of @bobmouldmusic from Husker Du and his solo work. Black Sheets of rain anyone? Been a huge fan ever since and he’s still making some of the best music out there.
Another album that was a soundtrack to a certain part of my life. And most importantly not a duff track on it. Changes. A Good Idea. Hoover Dam. If I Can’t Change Your Mind. Fortune Teller. It’s absolutely relentless. And one the the best albums of the 90s.

Day 2: #10albumsin10days
Iron Maiden - Killers
Introduced to them by a friend at school and realised they did the Daley Thompson lucazade advert song. This was the first LP I bought and the start of a musical journey that took me through every genre going. So I owe this album a lot.
Some great songs - Wrathchild, Killers, Murders in the Rue Morgue, and and my first sight of Derek Riggs artwork. Now you don’t get that with a download!
